PE at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School

Intent

The intent of our PE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of PE enabling them to know more about physical activity and keeping healthy.

Our curriculum plan falls in line with external inter-school competitions and is a progressive unit of lessons each term building on basic skills week by week resulting in intra-school competitions. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St Clare’s not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and leadership and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our intent is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Vision

It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. All children are given equal opportunities to participate in physical activities and take on leadership roles within the lesson.  It is our aim to ensure every child is given the opportunity to take part in an extra- curricular sporting activity every year and barriers which may hinder those are removed to ensure equality for all children.

Implementation

Throughout the year staff will have the opportunity to receive CPD from NPCAT Sport PE Specialists in order to develop confidence and knowledge of the PE curriculum. PE is delivered for a minimum of 2 hours every week. Assessment of PE is an ongoing process using the Primary PE Passport App. This is child centred and allows pupils’ achievements in and out of school to be recorded and tracked from Nursery right through to Year 6 all from an iPad. The PE Passport enables staff to monitor the progress of each individual child along with supporting photographic evidence which can be added to year on year. Lessons are planned to ensure that lessons are fully inclusive and take account of children’s differing needs and physical ability.

To broaden and expand children’s opportunities and to ensure physical education is accessible to all children, a sports week will be held annually to allow children to take part in new sports they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to and it is an opportunity to involve parents in sporting activities.

Each lesson follows the schools teaching and learning policy (retrieval, vocabulary, explain and model, check for understanding and applied learning). Vocabulary is unit and year group specific to ensure progression is evident throughout key stages. Examples of the vocabulary progression document can be found at the bottom of the page.

Swimming

Children in KS2 are taught key skills in swimming through lessons. Within these lessons, children are taught to become effective swimmers in a variety of strokes, enabling them to swim at least 25 metres confidently. We were able to offer our children top-up swimming sessions using or PE premium funding to target children who were less confident and able swimmers with great success.

Year 6 2023-24

Number of pupils in cohort: 30

Number of pupils who can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 100%
